What is 'Courage'?

Updated: Dec 5, 2020

Let me ask you this question. What is courage? Is it bravery, or is it toughness? Or is it the feeling that you get when you stand up to a bully? Okay, courage can mean many different things to many different people. To me, courage means the ability to do the right things all the time. Let's get deeper into this topic by looking at a story from the history of India. The great epic of Mahabharata had the extreme battle of Kurukshetra. The Kurukshetra was a fight between the dharmic (One who always follows the right path) Pandavas and the mighty Kauravas. Before we get into more about courage we need to grasp the knowledge of who the Kauravas were.

The Kauravas were the cousins of the Pandavas. They were a mighty group and were made up of 100 brothers. Out of these 100 brothers, Duryodhana was the oldest Kaurava brother. He was extremely arrogant, selfish, and jealous of the Pandavas. Even though the Pandavas and the Kauravas were cousins, the Kauravas had always given difficulties to the Pandavas. This is the main reason for the differences between Pandavas and the Kauravas.

Anyway, Arjuna who was the 3rd Pandava prince refused to fight the great battle of Kurukshetra. He was considered to be the best archer and was extremely brave. And what is amazing is that he is the friend of the Lord himself. But why didn't he want to fight? Thought you might ask. All Arjuna's relatives chose the side of the Kauravas to fight the battle of justice. Arjuna wanted to run away and didn't want to raise an arrow on his relatives. Pause right here and think. Where was Arjuna's courage lacking? His decision of not willing to fight or doing the right thing and creating justice? Fortunately, Lord Krishna was his charioteer and that was when the Bhagavad Geetha was narrated by Krishna to Arjuna, to do the right thing.

Like I told you, courage is nothing but doing the right thing even when no one is watching. My dependable mind (😂) mind thought of something we could all try in this disastrously, crazy, mean(I could go on and on) lockdown. Try to do the right thing for a week (We should do this all the time, but some of us can be a little naughty, including me! That's fine!😂 But, try your best to be nice!)
